"EN GARE": a memorial augmented reality trail across France
Winner of the French Ministry of Armed Forces' "Innovative Digital Services for Memorial Tourism" competition, BavAR[t] created an unprecedented hybrid trail linking SNCF stations to national memorial sites.
The train station — a place of daily passage. Yet these platforms carry memories and traces of the past. The EN GARE project turns every journey into a moment of remembrance, blending physical exhibitions in stations with augmented reality experiences leading to the memorial sites.
A memorial journey from station to site
BavAR[t], in collaboration with the ONAcVG (National Office for Veterans and War Victims) and the French Ministry of Armed Forces, developed a geolocated memorial mediation system linking train stations to nearby memorial sites.
In each station, physical exhibitions welcome travellers: posters, archives, testimonies. The BavAR[t] app extends this experience — historical archives are overlaid on the platforms in augmented reality, then a geolocated trail guides the visitor to the memorial, where the experience continues.
A contemplative, sober experience, designed for a broad audience — no ticket, no booking required.

The trail in 3 acts
Act 1 — The station today: a daily circulation space where travellers cross paths — with a physical exhibition inviting them to look up and reflect.
Act 2 — Hidden memory: AR archive overlays on the platforms reveal the memorial dimension of these transit spaces.
Act 3 — To the memorial: a geolocated trail guides the visitor from the station to the memorial site, where the AR experience deepens and expands.
A national-scale institutional project
This project was supported through the "Innovative Digital Services for Memorial Tourism" initiative
BavAR[t] is honored to have been selected as winner of this competition, which supports innovative project leaders bringing digital solutions to France's memorial tourism landscape.
The EN GARE project demonstrates that maximum accessibility (free, no booking, open to all travellers) and institutional quality (archival content, sober tone, memorial-grade mediation) are fully compatible with the BavAR[t] platform.
