"Sport in 1900": an augmented reality exhibition at the Paris Olympics

For the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, BavAR[t] partnered with the Carton Voyageur Museum to unveil a unique immersive experience across 19 Olympic venues.

The museum holds a unique collection of sport-themed postcards from 1900. BavAR[t] integrated augmented reality into the exhibition, allowing visitors to discover historical archives in AR directly at France's greatest stadiums — making the Breton museum's collection accessible to a national audience.

A deep dive into sport history through postcards

The Carton Voyageur Museum (Baud, Morbihan, Brittany) holds a unique collection of iconographic postcards documenting sport in 1900 — cycling, athletics, gymnastics, rowing — at the time of the very first modern Olympic Games.

BavAR[t] created a playful digital quest: visitors discover the archived postcards in augmented reality, superimposed onto the current Olympic venue. A journey through time — the vintage imagery of sport in 1900 animated and overlaid onto the Eiffel Tower, Roland Garros, or the Stade de France.

The exhibition was deployed across 19 cities and Olympic venues, making the collection accessible to a national audience during France's biggest sporting event of the century.

Project partner

The Carton Voyageur Museum — France's only postcard museum in Baud (Morbihan) — celebrates the postcard as a witness to history. In partnership with the city of Baud and DRAC Brittany, the museum trusted BavAR[t] to deploy its first augmented reality experience — during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Sport 1900 AR experience

The 19 Olympic venues — a museum without walls

The "Sport in 1900" exhibition was deployed at France's greatest sporting venues: Tour Eiffel, Trocadéro, Champ de Mars, Grand Palais, Invalides, Parc des Princes, Roland Garros, Stade de France, Orange Vélodrome, Allianz Riviera, Groupama Stadium, and more.

Visitors at any of these 19 sites simply opened the BavAR[t] app, pointed their smartphone at the venue, and discovered postcards from 1900 showing the same sports being played 124 years earlier — superimposed on the current landscape.

This project was supported through the partnership with the city of Baud and DRAC Brittany

BavAR[t] is proud to have brought France's national heritage collections into the heart of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This project demonstrates that a small regional museum — with the right digital partner — can achieve national-scale cultural reach in alignment with major public events.

The next phase of the collaboration will integrate animated 3D revisits of postcards, deepening the immersive experience beyond simple AR overlays.
